GUWAHATI: In commemoration of the birth anniversary of the revered Assamese hero Lachit Barphukan, an All-Assam Inter-College/University speech competition was organised at Dispur College today.
The event, themed "Lachit Barphukan’s Patriotism and Present Generation," was conducted by the debate and symposium section of the College Students’ Union in collaboration with Guwahati Lachit Sangha.
A total of 28 participants from various institutions across the state engaged in the competition, overseen by Dhrubajit Gogoi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and Faculty In-Charge of the Debate and Symposium Section.
The inaugural session featured Navajyoti Borah, Principal of Dispur College, who spoke eloquently on the enduring legacy of Bir Lachit Barphukan and his profound historical and socio-political significance to the region. Borah expressed gratitude to Guwahati Lachit Sangha for their collaboration, emphasising how such competitions play a crucial role in motivating the present generation to delve into intellectual discussions on Assam's rich heritage and its heroic figures.
Mrinal Patowary, General Secretary of Lachit Sangha, also emphasised the event's significance in initiating academic debate and dialogue on the unwavering bravery and sacrifice of the great Assamese leader. The inaugural session also witnessed the presence of Sanchay Jyoti Bora, Principal of Pandu College.
Judging the competition were Bishaldeep Kakati, Advocate, Gauhati High Court, and noted Assamese writer and journalist Pranjit Das, while the role of the chair of the speaker was fulfilled by Sunita Agarwalla, Vice Principal of Dispur College.
Dorothy Bora from Cotton University secured the coveted first prize, followed by Arunima Dhar from Assam Royal Global University in second place and Rahul Rohan Paul from KC Das Commerce College in third place.
