Sonowal Unveils 5-Year Plan To Develop New National Waterways

 

GUWAHATI: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, visited the Noida Head Office of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) on Tuesday, June 25. Sonowal emphasised the critical need to develop and expand national waterways to boost passenger and freight movement.

Sonowal unveiled a five-year action plan focused on developing new national waterways and promoting river cruises to boost tourism. The plan includes collaboration with Northeastern Region (NER) states to ensure effective project implementation and address human resource challenges. 

Sonowal assessed IWAI's efforts to promote Inland Water Transport (IWT) activities in the North Eastern Region, particularly on NW 2, 16, and 31 - the Brahmaputra, Barak, and Dhansiri rivers in Assam. The review also covered regional connectivity enhancements with neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar.
