Smartphone Users Check Their Phones Within 15 Minutes Of Waking Up: Report

 

GUWAHATI: Users in India generally check their smartphones almost 80 times each day on average, with almost 84% of users checking their phones within 15 minutes of waking up, as revealed in a report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) India.

The report further revealed that almost 31% of people’s waking time is spent on smartphones even as most users start feeling a sense of panic or anxiety when their phone’s battery goes below the 20% mark. 

The volume of smartphones and general smartphone usage has seen a manifold increase between 2010 to 2023 due to the affordability of smartphones and the availability of cheap data in India, most of the population has skipped the usual desktop phase seen in developed countries. The usage of the internet is now at 71% with almost 1.4 billion smartphone sales.

The report further revealed that 1 in 2 times people pick up their phones without any reason, and almost 5-10% of occasions the intent is exploratory when people are clear on the action but not app, while almost less than half the number of times people pick up their phones it is with a pre-determined intent. 

Time spent using smartphones has also seen a sharp increase from 2 hours to 4.9 hours in 2023, because of the role of smartphones in the daily activities of people, with streaming content being the predominant use and occupying 50% of the share of time spent, followed by gaming and shopping, as stated in the report.
