GUWAHATI: Nearly six months have passed since the submission of Clause 6 report of the Assam Accord by the committee to the Assam government but the report has not yet reached the centre which is indicative of the fact that there is still a long road to be traversed for the implementation of the clause which is one of the burning issues in the state politics.
The Union Government reconfirmed that the recommendations of the Clause 6 Committee on Assam Accord is still with the Assam government and have not been submitted to the centre for any action on the raging issue.
In a written reply in Rajya Sabha (RS) on 'whether recommendations on Assam Accord has been submitted by the panel to the government, Minister of State (MoS) MHA G Kishan Reddy replied, "The high-Level Committee constituted by MHA on Clause 6 of Assam Accord submitted its report to Assam government. The recommendations under examination of state government.”
The high-powered committee that the Centre constituted in July 2019 for the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord of 1985 submitted its report to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal back in February.
The 14-member committee, headed by Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma, a former judge of the Gauhati High Court was constituted on 15th July 2019 by the Ministry of Home Affairs (North-East Division) to suggest measures and recommendations for proper implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
However, due to the lack of any updates from the state and the central government, the report was made public on 11th August by the All Assam Students Union (AASU).
