The incident came to light after an NGO lodged an FIR on Wednesday, January 8 raising concerns about possible dog smuggling in the area.
When questioned by the locals and NGO officials, the individuals gave inconsistent responses. Initially, they verbally admitted to selling the dogs to Meghalaya for the meat trade but later changed their statements.
The police assured that a detailed investigation is being carried out, and further action will depend on the findings.
Speaking to GPlus, an official from Chandmari Police Station said, “We have apprehended them, but the case is under inquiry. After investigation, we will legally arrest them.”
Further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, animal welfare activists across the city have urged authorities to ensure stricter monitoring to prevent such incidents in the future.
