The members of the bike-borne squad, including women, will be on duty 24 hours.

District Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta said the squad underwent training in unarmed combat for the past 15 days.

“There is a large turnout of devotees during the puja in Silchar and there could be situations where the women are vulnerable to inappropriate behaviour by young men. The squad will be on duty 24 hours to ensure that they do not face any untoward situation,” he said.

He said the squad was deployed even last year and it was a success. “People had appreciated the initiative and extended their full cooperation,” he said while hoping that the same cooperation will be received this year.

Durga Puja begins on Wednesday, October 9 and will go on until October 12 when it will culminate in the immersion.
