GUWAHATI: Filmmaker Shankar Borua is all set to bring out Rongeen, an Assamese movie about a rap artist who helps a school teacher turned politician take on a local leader.

Kussum Koilash, one of Assam’s most popular rappers and a Youtube sensation plays a pivotal role in the film which is set in a rural Assam setting, from where most of the area’s rap comes from. Borua describes this movie as “political musical.”

The film’s soundtrack has nine songs, all of which are a collaborative effort between the director and Koilash. The film will be released on March 15 and is set in Assam’s turbulent history which was marked by militancy.

Koilash said that this is the first film ever from Assam that is set around rap music and has a novelty factor.

The film comes out a time when India’s indie rap music scene has into mainstream light, courtesy Zoya Akhtar’s massive film, Gully Boy.
