GUWAHATI: A stay order has been issued by District & Sessions Judge Court, Kamrup (M) regarding the custody of Prince, a Golden Retriever who was rescued from alleged abuse on December 13. The case, which has sparked outrage among animal rights activists, revolves around Prince’s owner, Salimul Islam, who was accused of mercilessly beating the dog.

The incident first came to light on November 20, when a video of the abuse went viral, compelling the Purrpaws Foundation to take action. Supported by activists Abhay Bora and Chandamita Das, the foundation sought to file a complaint at Dispur Police Station and rescue the dog. However, their initial attempts met with no response.
On the following day, accompanied by police, the team went to Salimul Islam’s residence only to find that he had fled, leaving Prince behind in deplorable conditions. The dog was discovered confined in an unsanitary aluminum partition, surrounded by feces and urine, without food or water. Metal rods, believed to have been used for further abuse, were also found at the scene.
Prince was rescued and placed under the care of the Purrpaws Foundation, with support from PETA India and Pal Foundation. However, the matter escalated when Salimul Islam filed a petition seeking to regain custody of the dog. The investigating officer surprisingly backed the accused, raising questions about the handling of the case.
Despite presenting evidence of abuse, including Prince’s deteriorated condition, a health report submitted to the court claimed that the dog was in good health. In response, the Purrpaws Foundation, represented by advocates Bijan Mahajan and Nimish Mahajan, filed a petition in the Sessions Court on December 13, opposing the accused’s request.
The court acknowledged the concerns and issued a stay order, ensuring Prince remains under the foundation's care until the next hearing.
"We would like to express our gratitude to the legal team, and all the animal lovers who have supported Prince through this difficult time. We will remain vigilant in ensuring that justice is served and that Prince receives the care and protection he deserves", said Nandini Baruah, an Animal Activist.
"We are committed to ensuring Prince’s safety and well-being," said a representative from Purrpaws Foundation. "We will not rest until justice is served."
Further details are awaited.
