Talking to GPlus, his legal counsel, Advocate A. Sabur Tapadar said, "He was released around 6:35 p.m."
Mozumder was first arrested on March 25 on charges of insulting a Scheduled Tribe staff member of the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, among other allegations. He was granted bail on March 26 and released from jail on March 27. However, his relief was short-lived, as he was rearrested in connection with a fresh case.
According to an FIR lodged by Assam Co-operative Apex Bank’s Managing Director, D. Saikia, Mozumder allegedly entered the first floor of the bank’s headquarters in Panbazar on March 25 at around 12:30 PM and attempted to steal crucial documents. At the time, he was covering a protest demonstration against alleged corruption in the bank.
His arrest and subsequent rearrest triggered strong reactions from journalists and press bodies, who called it an attack on press freedom. Mozumder’s supporters argued that he was being targeted for exposing alleged irregularities at the bank, while the authorities maintained that his actions warranted legal action.
