Senior Assam Journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumder Rearrested In Second Case 

 

GUWAHATI: Senior journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumder, who was granted bail in one case, was rearrested late on Thursday, March 27 evening by the police in connection with the second case registered at Panbazar Police Station in Guwahati. He was taken away by the police as soon as he came out of the jail after getting bail, on March 27 evening. He was arrested subsequently.

The case (No. 111/25) was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 329, 324(4), 351(2), 309(4), and 115. 

As per the FIR lodged by the bank’s Managing Director, D Saikia, Mozumder allegedly entered the first floor of the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank head office in Panbazar on March 25 around 12:30 PM. and attempted to steal crucial documents. Mozumder was at the time covering a protest demonstration against alleged corruption in the bank.

As per Panbazaar police, they arrested him in connection with a case involving trespassing and attempted theft at bank. Named in the FIR and identified by witnesses, Mozumder allegedly gained unauthorised access to restricted areas of the bank with the intent to steal confidential documents. The accused also reportedly threatened bank employees, creating panic and fear. 

Speaking to GPlus, Mozumder’s counsel, Adv A. Sabur Tapadar, said they would move for bail after he is produced in court later in the day. " The arrest of Dilwar is a blatant example of police high-handedness, arbitrary and illegal detention. This disturbing trend is transforming Assam into a police state, which is detrimental to democratic principles. We will vigorously challenge this injustice in Court," he said.
