Section 144 imposed across Police Districts of Guwahati

GUWAHATI: After massive protest rallies were carried out in Guwahati to condemn the brutal murder of two Guwahati youths, Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das in Karbi Anglong, section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been imposed in all the police districts of Guwahati with immediate effect as informed by Ramandeep Kaur, DCP, East Police District.

Earlier today massive protests and demonstrations broke out in Chandmari, Dighalipukhuri, Lachit Nagar and other places across Guwahati. However, despite Section 144 being imposed, protests continue in several pockets.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) empowers a magistrate to prohibit an assembly of more than four people in an area. According to sections 141-149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the maximum punishment for engaging in rioting is rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and/or fine.
