SC to hear plea against the recitation of Sanskrit Hymns at Kendriya Vidyalayas

GUWAHATI: After a PIL was filed by Madhya Pradesh based advocate Veenyak Shah with regards to the recitation of Sanskrit hymns at Kendriya Vidyalayas which violates the principles of Secularism, the top court has directed a larger bench to hear the PIL.

Veenyak Shah also said that the hymn was a “religious prayer” which violates the rights of other religious and linguistic groups as well as the rights of atheist and rationalist persons.

The plea has challenged the recital of the Sanskrit hymn "asato ma Sadgamaya" and a Hindi prayer at morning assemblies of students at Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country.

It is to be mentioned that according to the plea, the rules of Kendriya Vidyalaya  Sangathan transgresses the freedom of conscience under article 25, article 19 as well as the ban on 'religious instruction under article 28(1) of the Indian Constitution.
