SC asks Political Parties to Upload Candidates' Criminal Record on Social Media

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court have ordered all the political parties to ensure that they publish details of candidates contesting for Parliament or Assembly polls with criminal records.

It is to be mentioned that in the course of hearing a petition by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, who had asked the court to ban the fielding of candidates with criminal cases against them, the Apex Court passed this order.

These are to include what crime the candidate has been accused of, and what stage the criminal case has reached – FIR, investigation, charge sheet, or trial.

Earlier in September 2018 had ordered that political candidates to declare their criminal background to the Election Commission before contesting polls and becoming party officials.
