GUWAHATI: The residents of Luit Nagar in Noonmati, Guwahati, continue to struggle with the terrible condition of their main road, which has remained severely damaged for the past three to four years. Despite facing daily hardships, particularly during the monsoon season, no substantial repair work has been undertaken, leaving locals frustrated and urging the authorities to take immediate action.

The road, riddled with large potholes, uneven surfaces, and poor drainage, poses a constant risk to commuters, especially schoolchildren, elderly residents, and motorists. During heavy rainfall, the potholes turn into waterlogged pits, making it nearly impossible for pedestrians and vehicles to navigate safely. Residents report frequent accidents, vehicle damage, and health concerns due to dust and stagnant water.

"The condition of the road worsens every monsoon. It’s been years of false promises and no real progress. We’re forced to live with this daily inconvenience, and it’s affecting our safety and health," said a local resident.

Despite repeated complaints and appeals to the concerned authorities, the road has remained in a state of disrepair. The lack of timely maintenance and proper infrastructure development has left the community feeling neglected.

When contacted, Ward Councillor Manoj Kumar Nath (Ward number 55), stated, “Earlier, the road was under the refinery’s jurisdiction. Recently, the Public Works Department (PWD) has taken over its responsibility. The initial process of estimation has been completed, and now the work will begin after the necessary funds are sanctioned.”

While the councillor’s assurance provides a glimmer of hope, residents remain sceptical due to past delays and unmet promises. They fear that bureaucratic hurdles and funding issues might further postpone the much-needed repairs.

Local commuters and residents are now calling for immediate and decisive action from the authorities to address the deteriorating road conditions. They stress that infrastructure improvements are not a luxury but a necessity, and that the government must prioritise basic civic amenities to ensure public safety and well-being.

Until tangible work begins, Luit Nagar’s residents continue to endure daily struggles, holding onto hope that their long-standing demands will finally be met.
