GUWAHATI: The lack of strict enforcement of traffic rules at night has raised serious safety concerns in Assam’s capital, as reckless driving, overspeeding, and violations of basic traffic rules continue unchecked. Despite an increasing number of accidents recently, nighttime traffic violations have been dime-a-dozen.

Residents have reported frequent instances of overspeeding, drunk driving, and signal violations in key areas such as GS Road, Chandmari, Zoo Road, AT Road, Maligaon, and Amingaon, along with the National Highways particularly after midnight. With traffic police presence significantly reduced during late hours, many drivers flout rules with impunity, putting pedestrians and other motorists at risk.
Heavy trucks and commercial vehicles, which are restricted during daytime, dominate the roads at night, often violating lane discipline and speed limits. Additionally, unauthorised parking of vehicles, particularly near bars, restaurants, and shopping centres, obstructs movement and increases the chances of accidents.
Recent months have witnessed a spike in nighttime road accidents, with several cases involving two-wheelers and pedestrians. A youth lost his life after being hit by a courier truck in the Hatigaon area on September 22. Another major accident occurred at Khanapara on November 1, when two vehicles collided, resulting in significant damage to both cars. The NH-27 junction near Radisson Blu witnessed another major accident on November 15, evening at around 8 PM, raising further concerns about the safety of the area, which has become notorious for frequent mishaps.
Additionally, in a statement, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also stated that 163 lives were lost in road accidents across the state between December 24, 2024, and January 15, 2025, raising serious concerns about the safety of commuters and pedestrians.
While traffic officials acknowledge the rising violations, enforcement remains lax due to a shortage of personnel and inadequate surveillance systems. Speed cameras and CCTVs, installed in select locations, are often non-functional or ignored.
Talking to GPlus, a senior traffic official said, “It is disheartening how road accidents have increased in the city in recent times. We as the authorities try our best being deployed at every nook and cranny of Guwahati. But, lack of awareness at times may lead to accidents. People drive under the influence even after being aware of the safety risks and legal actions, so that is another point to think about!”
“That being said, the effort has to be from both sides of the people and the police to keep mishaps and accidents at bay,” he added.
Among other different ways to improve accountability and safety, the following are a few measures which can be highlighted such as increased night patrolling to curb reckless driving, installation of functional CCTV cameras for better monitoring, regular breathalyzer tests to deter drunk driving, and stronger penalties for rule violators to enforce discipline.
As Guwahati continues to grow, ensuring strict implementation of traffic regulations at night is crucial to prevent accidents and safeguard lives.
