Reports Of 300 AASU Members Joining BJP False

GUWAHATI: The report of 300 AASU members joining the BJP this week, which was reported by multiple media houses turned out to be false.

As per media reports, a significant rift had allegedly emerged within the All Assam Student Union (AASU) as more than 300 former members, including ex-leader Dibya Jyoti Medhi, announced their decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) this week.

This news was confirmed to be false as per the official statements from AASU.

Talking to GPlus, a senior AASU member said, “Dibya Jyoti Medhi who has announced this, is not even a member of AASU. We can confirm that such reports are false and a majority of them are rumours. We can confirm that no such shifts are ongoing in the party.”

The development reportedly followed after the conclusion of the AASU's central annual conference held in Morigaon, Assam. Allegedly, in a meeting held on December 4 in Guwahati, a delegation of AASU leaders and activists, led by Dibya Jyoti Medhi, conveyed their support for the saffron party to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Talking to the media, former AASU leader Dibya Jyoti Medhi also said, “The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) is running a monarchy. There is no democracy in the unit. A section of the students' union remained as advisers, while, the genuine students are not being benefitted from AASU’s leadership. I think it's all about active politics to fulfil the aspirations of the people. At a certain age, one should quit AASU. Talks are on with the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Earlier, I worked under the leadership of AASU and now I will work according to the party leadership. We and the younger generation are drawn to the Chief Minister's development journey, and due to this, we are more influenced by the BJP.”
