GUWAHATI: The Rajiv Gandhi Path in Jyotikuchi is an arterial road that connects to ISBT from Jyotikuchi Tiniali. The traffic moving towards Lokhra from AK Azad Road gets diverted through Rajiv Gandhi Path and reaches Mani Ram Dewan Trade Centre near ISBT and Tirupati Balaji Temple.
The road has been under construction since 2016 and has recently been completed. As construction is ongoing at Lokhra for the upcoming flyover, to avoid massive traffic jams, almost all vehicles going to ISBT or other offices nearby from AK Azad Road take the Rajiv Gandhi Path to reach the destination. There are various traffic issues that are growing in the area because of heavy vehicular activity on the road which has started recently.
A shopkeeper whose shop is located at Jyotikuchi Tiniali talking to G Plus said, “During peak hours nowadays there is a huge traffic jam at the Tiniali. Moreover, traffic police personnel are not allotted at the point to manage the traffic.”
The Jyotikuchi Tiniali point is also jam-packed with parked share taxis, and e-rickshaws, and also there is an auto stand said another resident of the area.
“In Delhi, every lane and road has a particular speed limit sign board displayed, this road (Rajiv Gandhi Path) requires a speed limit sign board as vehicles ply very fast which makes the road vulnerable to accidents,” said another resident.
A senior official of the transport office said that displaying sign boards is the responsibility of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and the traffic police. A traffic police official passed the buck to the Transport Department. Regarding deploying traffic police personnel at the Jyotikuchi Tiniali, the official said it will be soon deployed.
The traffic police also need to check the parking on the road and street vendors are gradually occupying the footpaths.
It needs to be mentioned that near Maniram Dewan Trade Centre, the government is constructing the integrated Directors’ complex, where all the offices of State Government Directors will be shifted within a few years. Even the GMC office is being built there.
“In the future, the Rajiv Gandhi Road will be a major road to reach ISBT and will be frequently used by commuters,” said another resident Manoj Deb.
If the authorities do not plan the traffic well, the road will become more chaotic in the coming days.
