GUWAHATI: Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday July 3 officially resigned from the post of Congress Party president taking moral responsibility for the party’s loss in 2019 general elections.

In his resignation Gandhi wrote, “Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party. It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress President.”

He further mentioned that it would be incorrect for him to select the next leader of the party.

“I suggested to my colleagues in the Congress Working Committee that the way forward would be to entrust a group of people with the task of beginning the search for a new President,” wrote Gandhi in his resignation.

Gandhi took to Twitter and wrote: “It is an honour for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. I owe the country and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love.”

On Tuesday, July 2, a Congress worker allegedly attempted suicide in Delhi in a bid to stop Gandhi from resigning.

The party worker tried to hang himself from a tree outside the party office in Delhi.
