Protests Erupt in Assam’s Dibrugarh Over Closure Of Tea Estate Road

GUWAHATI: A civil unrest broke out in Dibrugarh’s Jalan Tea Estate at the Alubari Line gate on Tuesday, November 5. After authorities from the Assam Medical College (AMC) ordered a sudden closure of the gate, local residents gathered at once in frustration to demand access to the site.

The demonstration took a violent turn as protestors clashed with on-site law enforcement, leading to several detentions. In an attempt to secure the area, the authorities also reportedly deployed an excavator to block entry by digging up part of the entryway, but this ended up intensifying the crowd’s anger instead.

“The corporation has forcefully barred entry for our people,” shared a protester at the site. “The police have also laid their hands on our women. They brought only two female officers to handle the situation; the rest were all men.”

“This is the main road to the national highway,” said another resident. “School children come and go to their schools via this route. We come and go to work via this route. Such a decision should be taken only after taking all matters in mind.”

Reportedly, during the violent altercation, two journalists and a senior police official are said to have been struck with injuries.
