Dibrugarh University Commemorates Bhupen Hazarika's Death Anniversary During Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

 

GUWAHATI: Dibrugarh University observed the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika on Tuesday, November 5 , as part of its ongoing Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The event paid tribute to Hazarika's significant contributions to Assamese culture and Indian music, drawing an engaged audience of students and faculty.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Jiten Hazarika, alongside Registrar  Paramananda Sonowal and  Pallavi Deka Bujarbaruah, Chairperson of the Centre for Performing Arts. A highlight of the event was a special lecture delivered by Rishikesh Goswami, the Chief of the Assam Child Literature Trust.

In his opening remarks, Vice-Chancellor Hazarika reflected on Hazarika’s pioneering role as a social artist in Assam. “His songs have fostered unity and elevated our state’s rich culture and traditions, leaving an indelible mark on Assam's cultural landscape,” he stated.

Paramananda Sonowal, in his welcome address, emphasised the importance of this Remembrance Day, stating, “As we gather to honour the legendary Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, we reflect on his invaluable contributions to the culture and traditions of Assam.”

Rishikesh Goswami further explored the significance of  Hazarika’s music across generations. He commented, “Dr. Hazarika's songs resonate as profound reflections of humanity, weaving together themes of love, struggle, and social justice. His music fosters deep connections with our culture and traditions, allowing listeners to explore their identities within the larger tapestry of Assamese heritage. Iconic pieces like 'Aji Ek Triyangon,' 'Manhu e Manhor Babe,' and 'Boha Bahu Brahmaputra' beautifully illustrate this essence, each carrying a timeless message that speaks to our shared humanity.”

The students from the Centre for Performing Arts performed several of Bhupen Hazarika’s songs, filling the venue with nostalgia and reverence for the late artist’s enduring influence on Assamese music and art.

The observance of Hazarika’s death anniversary was a key component of Dibrugarh University’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the university authorities, expressing heartfelt appreciation to all attendees for their participation in honouring Hazarika’s legacy.
