GUWAHATI: A bunch of power loom gamocha traders in Fancy Bazaar, Guwahati, has manhandled officials from ‘handloom flying squads’, which was constituted to check the flow of machine-made gamochas in the market.

The traders formed a gang and involved themselves in a physical brawl with the on-duty officials who were seizing the power loom gamochas from a roadside seller at the market.

The incident took place on Wednesday and forced the flying squad officials to lodge an FIR against the culprits at the Panbazar police station.

The flying squads team, which was established following the directives from deputy commissioner, include officials from the State Handloom and Textile department, district administrations and police personnel.

Deputy handloom officer Bipul Das, textile inspector Bhaskarjyoti Kalita, textile designer Nipon Goswami, handloom jecured master Dhanjit Baishya as well as demonstrators Pradip Das and Bharat Das were in the team, which was mistreated by the traders.

According to the squad, the traders had been repeatedly directed not to sell machine-made gamochas as it prohibits the state’s weavers to get their right wage.

Meanwhile, the Nalbari district administration on Friday seized imported gamochas in huge quantity from different parts of the district.

The gamochas were brought from outside the state and were believed to be distributed to the other parts of Assam ahead of Rongali bihu.
