GUWAHATI: The Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs has placed Assam under the protected area category following the publication of the Final National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Based on a report by The Assam Tribune, all foreign journalists on assignment in the state have been asked to leave and an Associated Press (AP) reporter was personally escorted by Assam Police to the airport and put in the next available flight to New Delhi.

It should be noted that up until now, foreign media was not allowed to enter Jammu & Kashmir and a few other hill states in the northeastern region, however now, Assam has been added to the list too.
Foreign journalists will now have to procure permissions from the MEA and are subject to final clearance by the MHA to conduct any journalistic activities in Assam.
