GUWAHATI: As the November 5, 2024, U.S. presidential election nears, former President Donald Trump reportedly appears to have the edge, especially in crucial swing states, according to a new poll.
The survey, which took place over the first two days of November, found that 49% of respondents plan to vote for Trump, giving Republicans a slight 1.8% lead over the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris. The poll sampled nearly 2,500 likely voters, with the majority identifying as female.
In the battleground states, which play a critical role in determining election outcomes, Trump is reportedly leading in all seven key regions: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Arizona shows the widest gap, with Trump holding 51.9% support compared to Harris’s 45.1%. In Nevada, 51.4% of voters favor Trump, while 45.9% back Harris. North Carolina also shows a Trump lead, with him garnering 50.4% of the vote to Harris’s 46.8%, as per reports.
In the U.S. political landscape, states are often categorised as “Red,” “Blue,” or “Swing” states. Red states lean reliably Republican, having consistently voted that way since 1980, while Blue states have predominantly favored Democrats since 1992. Swing states, however, remain unpredictable, often yielding very close results. For instance, in 2020, Joe Biden won Arizona by a razor-thin margin of about 10,000 votes.
Another media based poll released on October 29 indicated a slight advantage for Harris over Trump among registered voters, with Harris leading by a single percentage point, 44% to 43%. Since Harris entered the race in July, she has consistently polled ahead of Trump, though her lead has gradually decreased reportedly since late September
