Poling Underway In Assam’s Five Assembly Constituencies For Bye-Elections

 

GUWAHATI: Polling for bye-elections is underway across five assembly constituencies in Assam — Behali, Bongaigaon, Dholai, Samaguri, and Sidli — having started early on Wednesday, November 13, and will continue until 5 PM. These seats were left vacant after their elected MLAs transitioned to parliamentary roles following their victories in this year’s Lok Sabha elections.

The Election Commission of India announced the dates for bye-elections in October. 

In Assam, five MLAs, including a cabinet minister, vacated their assembly seats to assume positions in the Lok Sabha. Two of these MLAs belonged to the ruling BJP, with others from the AGP, UPPL, and Congress. Notable transitions included BJP leaders Parimal Suklabaidya and Ranjit Dutta, who won parliamentary seats in Cachar and Tezpur, AGP's Phani Bhushan Choudhury in Barpeta, and UPPL’s Joyanta Basumatary in Kokrajhar.

A total of 38 candidates have submitted their nominations, with 24 nominations filed on the final day, according to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam. The total nominations include three for Dholai, one for Sidli, five for Bongaigaon, 12 for Samaguri, and three for Behali. These bye-elections feature candidates from BJP, Congress, AAP, AGP, and UPPL.
