GUWAHATI: In a bid to enhance environmental sustainability and curb the usage of single-use plastic, Guwahati has implemented a ban on the sale and use of plastic flags. The move comes ahead of Independence Day and aims to reduce plastic waste in the city.
Local shopkeepers in areas such as Ulubari, Silpukhuri, and Six Mile have already taken steps to comply with the ban.
Speaking to G Plus, a shopkeeper highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, "This time we are not selling plastic flags since the usage of plastic is banned. It's crucial for us to contribute to a cleaner environment."
Another shopkeeper in Silpukhuri said, "This time there's no supply of plastic flags unlike in previous years."
Speaking to G Plus, Pallav Gopal Jha, District Commissioner of Kamrup Metro emphasised the rationale behind the decision, stating, "Since the usage of single-use plastics has been banned, so the sale of flags has been banned too."
The ban on plastic flags reflects Guwahati's commitment to sustainable practices and its determination to reduce plastic waste. The local administration aims to encourage citizens and businesses to adopt more eco-friendly alternatives, promoting a greener future for the city.
