GUWAHATI: Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) is expanding to a total capacity of 5,000 beds, making it the second-largest medical college in India after Patna Medical College. The Principal’s office will be located on the top floor of the new building, while the old hospital structure on the left side of the campus will be completely demolished. Construction work is expected to be completed by October 30.

Additionally, superspeciality services currently at Pragjyotishpur Medical College and GMCH will be relocated to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH), which is being upgraded with a new 800-bed facility built above ground level. Once ready, MMCH will become a major hub for superspeciality care, including neurology, cardiology, and planned liver transplantation services.

With the completion of Pragjyotishpur Medical College, MMCH, and the upgraded GMCH, Guwahati is expected to have one of the strongest medical ecosystems in India, capable of meeting healthcare needs for the next 50 to 75 years.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), said, “In the coming few years, Guwahati will boast the country’s second largest medical college with over 5,000 beds. With the upcoming Pragjyotishpur Medical College, MMCH and upgraded GMCH, Guwahati will have one of the best medical ecosystems in the country.”
