PK Choudhury to Head New Committee for Environment Impact Assessment

GUWAHATI: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has issued an order to set up a committee of Environment Impact Assessment Authority in Assam, as per the Environment Protection Act of 1986. Retired PWD Chief Engineer, Pradyut Kumar Choudhury, has been appointed as the chairman of this committee.

Other members of the committee are Department Head of Environmental Science, Gauhati University, Dr Hari Prasad Sarma and the Secretary of State Forest Department. As per Centre's guidelines, the committee will remain in office for 3 years.

Also, a 9 member state expert assessment committee has been set up to help the main committee, and retired Indian Forest Officer, Swapan Kumar Seal Sarma has been appointed as its chairman.

This special committee has been set up to protect the environment and biodiversity of the state and for immediate response in times of emergency. The guidelines issued stated that the chairman and members of the committee will be following the government guidelines to protect the environment and the surrounding.

State Environment Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya thanked the Centre's approach and welcomed the newly appointed committee.
