GUWAHATI: As Guwahati faced heavy rainfall on Thursday night, July 4, residents across the city experienced flash floods which extended well until Friday morning.
Footpaths got flooded in Bhangagarh, Wireless and B Borooah Road. Traffic dividers got submerged in Kalapahar, Bhaskarnagar and Wireless.

Water went inside cars in Kahilipara and Rajgarh, while houses in Hatigaon, Rukminigaon and Rukmini Nagar saw flood-waters entering. Water levels reached knee-high in several parts of the city as the ill-equipped drainage system was exposed.
The situation persisted well into Friday morning despite the rain receding.
Talking to GPlus, Ayush Saikia said, “I somehow got out of my muddy lane after the flood waters receeded, to reach office. But the main roads are heavily congested. Traffic jams are a norm in Guwahati after a downpour. It took me 25 mins to reach from Rajgarh to Ulubari.”
The artificial floods not only lead to traffic congestion but also entered houses in some areas of the city.

“Water entered low-lying houses in Hatigaon last night itself. The situation did not improve much in the morning as an entire stretch of Hatigaon remained flooded and traffic came to a halt”, said Mirzan Ahmed to GPlus.
As heavy rains lash Assam, Guwahati is struggling with artificial floods and waterlogging in the city due to ill-maintained drainage and a stream of other reasons, which are a hindrance to the smooth functioning of daily life.
