GUWAHATI: Clearing doubts Dr. Hiren Gohain stated that he was not factually aware of why an FIR was prepared against him.
Speaking to the media Dr. Gohain said, “An FIR has been prepared against me for sedition. I am not aware of the actual grounds. I am also not aware, on what evidence this accusation has been made.
“From what I have heard, in a public meeting of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill Virodhi Mancha and the Left Democratic Manch held on 7th December I had demanded independence of Assam.

“Actually, in their speeches, some of the speakers had raised concern that the demand for independence of Assam had become relevant. It was in that context I have mentioned that if all the democratic processes fail and if the Indian government completely ignores the rightful demands of the Assamese people only then the demand for independence would become relevant.
“The gist of my speech was we were protesting in a democratic way and our struggle is to safeguard the Indian constitution,” said Dr. Gohain.
