GUWAHATI: India’s Northeast region has witnessed a surge in domestic tourism, with over 125 lakh visitors registered in 2023, compared to 70 lakh in 2014. This report was revealed by Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat during the inauguration of the 12th International Tourism Mart (ITM) held at Kaziranga.

The gradual surge in tourism has been attributed to rapid infrastructural advancements, including improved transportation networks, upgraded facilities, and new tourist attractions. “Domestic tourism has seen unprecedented growth in the post-Covid era, and the Northeast has been a significant beneficiary,” Shekhawat said.

Additionally, the growth has led to a 2.5% increase in tourist accommodation facilities, boosting local economies.

Shekhawat also credited government initiatives like Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD schemes for driving sustainable tourism development in the region. Under Swadesh Darshan 1.0, ₹1,309 crore was allocated for 16 projects, while the PRASHAD scheme funded eight projects worth ₹256 crore.

One of them included extensive development at Assam’s Kamakhya temple, which welcomed 11 lakh visitors in 2022-23.
