GUWAHATI: The Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 1 said the Centre will not impose Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Assam.

Himanta Biswa said, “As Assam is the gateway to northeast India, ILP cannot be implemented here. If we implement ILP, unemployment level will increase three-fold. If people from outside cannot come to tea sector and oil sector, from where there will be employment opportunities.”

The ILP system is drawn from the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR), a system of travel restrictions imposed by the British in 1873.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed at Lahorijan area along Assam-Nagaland border after Dimapur police detained several people from the new field check gate for non possession of ILP which has been implemented recently in the district.
