GUWAHATI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is only the second woman in the history of independent India to present the Union Budget.
Sitharaman presented the Modi 2.0 government’s maiden budget in the Lok Sabha on Friday, July 5 where she held a red parcel like bag with a key hole on the emblem, breaking away from the tradition of using a briefcase.
Former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was the first and only woman until now to have presented the Union Budget in 1970 after she took over the position following Morarji Desai’s resignation as finance minister.
