GUWAHATI: In a bid to maintain law and order, the District Magistrate of Jorhat has enforced a night curfew along a five-kilometer belt on the Assam side of the Assam-Nagaland border.

Under Section 144 of the CrPC, this measure aims to restrict movement and vehicular traffic between 8 PM and 5 AM.

Sources said the decision to impose night curfew along the Nagaland border was taken following an intelligence input from the District Special Branch of the Assam Police.

According to reports, there are indications of extremist organizations attempting to infiltrate the state through the Nagaland border, specifically to carry out extortion drives in Jorhat district.

To counter any potential trouble, the order issued by the District Magistrate highlighted the recent enrollment of new volunteers by ULFA (I).

It is believed that these individuals may use the Nagaland border areas to sneak into Assam.

The night curfew has been implemented as a proactive measure to ensure the safety and security of the region's residents.

By restricting movement during the specified hours, the authorities aim to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain peace along the border.
