GUWAHATI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has reportedly instructed Assam’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to submit a comprehensive report addressing claims of extensive encroachment on forest lands within the Kamrup Metropolitan district.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, the tribunal reportedly highlighted concerns over the illegal occupation of substantial portions of 16 reserved forests, covering over 35,329 hectares. The report brings attention to unauthorised activities affecting environmentally sensitive zones, including prominent hills such as Fatasil, South Kalapahar, Jalukbari, Gotanagar, Hengrabari, Sarania, and Garbhanga. These areas play a vital role in preserving the district’s ecological balance and biodiversity.
