NF Railway Demolishes Unauthorised Structures In New Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier Railway on Saturday, June 11, carried out an eviction drive at Railway Colony in New Guwahati area.

According to NF Railway, a total of 21 unauthorised structures in the area were demolished. The residents allege that no prior notice was issued by the Railways. The eviction drive was carried out peacefully and RPF, local police and GRP were present for security.

The NF Railway said that the houses and businesses had encroached Railway’s land and were unauthorised settlements. Also, there were complaints that the area had become a hotspot for anti-social activities. The Railways will continue with these drives as a lot of land has been illegally occupied by people, said an NF Railway official to G Plus.

Evicted residents at the Railway Colony have been reportedly living in the area for the past 20 to 25 years. Talking to the media, a man who ran a furniture shop at the place said, “People who are living here are poor. We don't oppose this eviction as the land is totally owned by the Railway department. But at least we should have been given prior notice of the eviction.”
