GUWAHATI: September 17, 2020 marks the 70th Birthday of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. This is also the day when people celebrate Vishwakarma Puja, who is considered to be a Hindu god and a divine architect.

However, netizens this year have come together to celebrate National Unemployment Day in an ironic way and as such the hashtag #NationalUnemploymentDay has been trending on Twitter.

The backdrop to National Unemployment Day aka National Berozgar Day comes after India registered the steepest contraction of its GDP post Independence for the April-June quarter of the current financial year. As per the data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), India slumped 23.9% down as compared to the previous quarter (Jan-March) where it registered a growth of 3.1%.

As of 12:30 pm, as many as 2.54 million tweets using the hashtag '#NationalUnemploymentDay' had been posted on the micro blogging site, Twitter.

Congress leader and Minister of Parliament Rahul Gandhi tweeted on the occasion and stated that, "massive unemployment has forced the youth" to mark such a day.
