GUWAHATI: Unidentified insects have destroyed mustard and potato crops grown by agricultural working families in the greater Sonari Chapri Kankuri area of Assam's Dhakuakhana sub-division.
According to the hapless farming families, the two unknown pests have destroyed the mustard and potato crops cultivated by the farming community in vast areas such as Greater Kankuri, Chelajan to Baam gaon, Barsamukh, Bor Pomuwa, Kumarbari, and so on, according to media reports.
According to the farmers, they used insecticides to keep insects at bay in the area's potato fields, but the infestation of these pests could not be avoided.
Furthermore, the pest attack began in the mustard fields for the first time but spread throughout the region.
For a long time, mustard and potato produced from the Dhakuakhana landscape have been capturing the market across the state. Thousands of families have become financially self-sufficient and have contributed significantly to the state's rural economy through this and the traditional agricultural work of the sub-working division's farmers.
According to reports, the disaster struck the fields of the Dhakuakhana sub-division due to the ignorance of the Dhakuakhana sub-divisional Agriculture Department, where families have been benefiting immensely from traditional farming procedures through their own efforts for ages without any aid from government agricultural schemes.
Farmers received urea late, which caused a delay in the growth of mustard and potatoes. Numerous pests have attacked agricultural lands as a result of the delay.
As per reports, State Agriculture Minister and Guardian Minister of Lakhimpur District Atul Bora has demanded an urgent intervention in this regard, as well as an inquiry into the negligent condition of the sub-divisional agriculture department, which spent his days just hoping for a salary.
