Multiple organisations rally together in aid of Assam Floods victims

GUWAHATI: Assam is undergoing a severe flood situation and this year, the state has been hit harder as compared to previous years. Thus, multiple organisations in the state have rallied together and come forward to help victims across the state. 

Some notable organisations that came to the relief of flood victims this year include:

1. Feeding India, Guwahati Chapter

Volunteers of the organisation started relief distribution by helping 1000 families with 750+ Relief Kits which included rice, dal, chidwa, mudi, jaggery, biscuits, water bottles, soap, detergent, antiseptic lotions, mosquito repellent, sanitary pads, torchlights, potatoes, mosquito coils, candles, matchboxes and a few essential medicines were distributed along with for 750+ along with 2000+ clothes to the affected people, covering 3-4 villages in Morigaon district, including Bhuragaon. 

These materials were all given by residents of Guwahati to the 15 drop points across the city run by volunteers and packed for distribution. This initiative is to be followed by more drives in this week and the next. Volunteers of Feeding India- Guwahati completed their 1st Donation Drive of Flood Relief Campaign on Sunday, July 21. 

Feeding India runs the largest youth run network towards solving hunger and food waste. With more than 25,000 volunteers, also called Hunger Heroes, they collect and donate food in 75+ cities. Hunger Heroes also take up the task of spreading awareness and bringing on-ground change in the community. 

The Guwahati Chapter started in 2017 and has over 4000 volunteers. It is headed by Sachin Jha.

2.  Youth Development Society

Flood Relief was given by the Youth Development Society,an NGO for victims of the flood in Gauripur. 

3.  Leo Club of Guwahati Cosmopolitan 

 Leo Club of Guwahati Cosmopolitan has started its Leoistic Year 2019-20 with the most important activity required at this moment. They organised a "Mega Flood Relief Camp" at Malibari, Boko Somoriya, Kamrup Rural, Assam on July 21 in association with Lions Club of Guwahati Cosmopolitan as Leo-Lion serving together.

The team members have been collected relief materials since last Sunday, have travelled approximately 100 kms to reach out to the flood affected areas and have provided 12 hours of continuous engagement.

They have distributed clothes, puffed rice, bleaching powder, phenyl, sanitary pads, biscuits and water bottle and many essential materials to around 2000 flood affected people.

4. Khalsa Aid Team, United Sikhs Team along with AASYA (All Assam Sikh Youth Association Jorhat)

The team of Khalsa Aid set up a relief camp in Morigaon and distributed emergency supplies to people of flood-affected Assam, with volunteers providing food rations to around 4000 people.

5. JCI Kamrup Elite

Members of JCI Kamrup Elite provided massive flood relief to victims. They covered 21 villages in three days starting from July 19 to July 21. The villages include Rajabari, Panikheti, Soalmari, velgarhi, Burnhi,Andubara, Tapaguri, Khuliamari, Nalbari, Adabari - loharkata. 

They distributed 2500 food packets, bleaching powders and sanitary pads. Each food packet contained 1 kg rice, 500 gms daal, ½ kg chidwa, 2 ltr mineral water, 1 packet of biscuits, 1 packet of candles. 

The relief materials provided by them will feed around 10,000 people. 

It should be noted that as of Monday, July 22, 33,55,837 people across 2000 villages in Assam have been affected by the floods and 67 people and 187 animals, including 15 one-horned rhinos died.
