Muddy Water Supply By GMC Irks Guwahati Residents

GUWAHATI: For the past few days residents of certain areas of Guwahati are receiving muddy water supply to their homes from Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). This has turned into a crisis for many as GMC supply water is a primary source of water to their homes.

Complaints of muddy water flowing through GMC supply pipes have been received from different areas of Guwahati like Uzan Bazar, Kharghuli, Silpukhuri, Chandmari, Jaipur, Amiya Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Nava Graha Temple.

According to sources, the increasing rainfall in Guwahati for the past many weeks has turned the water muddy. On the other hand, the GMC has told the complainants that filters are being cleaned at the water treatment plants and this has resulted in muddy water.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation has three water supply treatment plants at Panbazar, Satpukhuri and Kamakhya. Water is pumped out from the river Brahmaputra to these pumps and after the processing, water is reserved for the different reservoirs located at the hilltops and distributed to the consumers. Some areas are supplied through direct pumping also.

Residents from these areas are now facing difficulties as the water supplied by the GMC is not fit even to wash utensils. Some people are also complaining of skin irritation after using this water. The residents said that the newly-appointed Mayor of GMC, Mrigen Sarania should look into this matter and take necessary actions as soon as possible.
Talking to G-Plus, a resident Rasween Das, of Lamb Road said, “We have been receiving dirty water for four to five days. I called the GMC helpline number and lodged a complaint regarding this.  While asking the reason they told me that the three filters are being cleaned, this is why people are facing this problem. However, they told me that this problem will be solved within next two to three days."
