Microsoft, Oracle offer highest packages to IIT-G students

The first phase of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) placement has ended on a robust note with the highest package offered to two students by Oracle and Microsoft with USD 136,000 and USD 135,000 respectively.   The IIT-G always attracts the best packages but now that the value of dollar has risen, the salaries seem to be rather remarkable. “The demand of IIT has increased in the undergraduate programmes of B.Tech. andB.Des. and the companies mostly prefer younger people who they can recruit according to their requirements. In the first round, 65% of the undergraduate students have been placed. And overall, 50% students have already been placed from masters and undergraduate. Almost 1,100 students have registered their names in the Centre for Career Development and 190 companies have registered this year,” said Public Relation Officer of IIT-G, LabanuKonwar, while speaking to G Plus.   Konwar informed that the primary reason why the package offered is highest this time is because of the increasing value of the dollar. Otherwise, IIT offered good placements earlier also. The highest package offered by Oracle is approximately equal to INR 93 lakhs per annum and Microsoft’s offer is Rs. 92 lakhs. These are international placements.   In India, the highest package of Rs. 36 lakhs has been offered by Tower Reach. This is the highest domestic package. “The major recruiter who has given the highest domestic offer is VMware. There are companies who have recruited 5-6 students and the major companies are Samsung, EXL services, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Oracle, VMware etc. with regard to the number of people that have been recruited,” said Konwar.   The placements will be better than the previous years as public sector units have been emphasized on. Last year there was a job scarcity when the private companies recruited the students and now that the PSUs will arrive at the IIT campus the recruitment will be better. “It is due to the world recession that the placements were less compared to last year. The students of IIT and IIM were offered jobs and were asked to join on later dates. Some of the candidates were even given a few months’ salaries and were later told that they will not be hired due to which the placement was less. The IITs and IIMs have decided that the companies who had offered jobs to students and cancelled their offers have not been allowed to come for campus recruitment this year,” Konwar informed.   Last year, Flipkart had also postponed the joining dates of the hired students for which, this year, the company has not been allowed to participate in many of the campuses. “The students are now emphasizing more on the government sector and they feel they should do something for their own nation. Being placed in private foreign companies does not allow them that chance and therefore they want to join the government sectors and be of service to the nation. The Supreme Court had banned the PSUs from undertaking campus interviews earlier. This has now been withdrawn. The recruitment in PSUs will start and students will get the opportunity to be placed in the PSUs,” Konwar added.   The placements start from 1st December and continue till March-April and the candidates who have not been placed will be placed in the second phase of the recruitment. On the first day of the placement season, IIT-G students received 138 job offers.    • Oracle and Microsoft offer highest packages of USD 136,000 and USD 135,000 respectively • 65% of undergraduate students placed from IIT-G • The placement record as improved by 10% this year • Tower Reach has offered the highest domestic package of Rs 36 lakhs • IIT-G students received 138 offers on the first day of the recruitment process • Almost 1,100 students registered their names in the Centre for Career Development   Stay updated on the go with GPlus News.
