Mass Protest Erupts at Tripura Border Over Alleged Bangladeshi Encroachment

GUWAHATI: Over 1,000 members of the Youth Tipra Federation, the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, staged a major protest along the India-Bangladesh border in South Tripura, alleging illegal encroachment by Bangladesh. Demonstrators claimed that the neighboring country had constructed an embankment within Indian territory, breaching international norms and the 150-yard buffer zone stipulated along the border.

Protesters, waving party flags and chanting slogans, accused the interim Bangladeshi government, led by Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus, of violating Indian sovereignty. The incident prompted a significant deployment of security forces, including the Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura Police, to maintain order and prevent escalation.

Suraj Debbarma, president of the Youth Tipra Federation, issued a stern warning during the protest. “We will not tolerate encroachment on our ancestral lands. If the illegal structure is not dismantled, we are ready to reclaim Chittagong Hill Tracts and Cox’s Bazar to establish a Greater Tipraland,” he said, reiterating the party’s long-standing demand for a separate homeland for Tripura’s indigenous communities.

The Tipra Motha movement, spearheaded by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, has increasingly resonated with the indigenous population, many of whom share ethnic and historical ties with communities in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts. The region has been fraught with tension since India’s partition, with longstanding grievances over displacement and demographic shifts.

Pradyot Debbarma voiced strong support for the demonstrators on social media, stating, “At Belonia today, thousands of our Tiprasa warriors were stopped by the BSF. Had they not been, the illegal embankment would have been torn down. We are only waiting for the green light.”

Tripura shares an 856-kilometer porous border with Bangladesh, and although bilateral relations have remained generally stable—especially following the 2015 Land Boundary Agreement—localized disputes and minor encroachments continue to spark unrest.

As of now, the Government of India has not issued an official response to the protest or the allegations regarding the embankment.
