Mass awareness campaign held to keep Umananda Island sustainable and plastic-free

GUWAHATI: On the occasion of World Water Day 2019, an NGO, Voice of Environment (VoE) had taken an initiative and conducted a mass awareness campaign for an eco-friendly, sustainable and plastic free Umananda Island.

The team on Sunday, March 24 initiated a mission to generate awareness among all visitors starting from Ferry Ghat at Uzan Bazaar to the island. The mission is being supported by Umananda Devalaya Parichalana Samiti, District administration Kamrup Metro and Inland Water Services Government of Assam.

Since the island is a heritage site, has a fragile ecosystem, has vast biodiversity of flora and fauna, they want to ensure it is clean and sustainable since it is a historic and cultural landscape for eco-tourism.

They want to create awareness for devotees and tourists who carry plastic bags, beverage bottles and other plastic materials and leave them scattered which is a potential threat to the island ecosystem and its biodiversity.

The NGO will continue working on this campaign with temple authorities and district administration and is also seeking support from all citizens to extend their helping hands to make this initiative successful together.
