GUWAHATI: Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom (51kg) advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Women's Boxing Championships after a hard-fought victory in the last-16 stage in Russia’s Ulan-Ude on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old defeated her Thai counterpart Jutamas Jitpong 5-0.
Following her win, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju took to his Twitter handle and shared a video of her match and tweeted “Well begun Mary Kom!”
Kom is the only woman to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven world championships.
Meanwhile, former silver-medallist Saweety Boora (75kg) lost her pre-quarterfinal bout in a split decision against Lauren Price from Wales.
