Manipuris Demand Autonomous Council in Assam

GUWAHATI: A four-member delegation of Manipuri people of Assam led by Chief Adviser of The All Assam Manipuri Youths' Association (AAMYA) Ksh Kun-dal Singha along with the president of AAMYA, working president of Manipuri National Council (MNC) and the general secretary of AAMYA met Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on February 12. 


The meeting was held for the long-standing demand for a Manipuri Autonomous Council in Assam. During the meeting, the delegates briefed the Chief Minister about the deprivation faced by the Manipuris and the urgent need for Manipuri Autonomous Council in the state. 


AAMYA stated the association has been demanding the Manipuri Autonomous Council for about six lakh Manipuris living in Assam along with Manipuri National Council, All Assam Manipuri Students' Union, Assam Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, All Assam Manipuri Women Meira Paibi Coordination Committee, Manipuri Muslim Development Organisation, North-East Pangal Association, All Assam Manipuri Muslim Students Union, etc. It is a legitimate demand for the socio-economic development of the politically-deprived Manipuris in Assam who are living here without any political representatives," the statement read. 


"Manipuris had launched a series of dharnas and rallies in the recent past, the most significant being the 5,000 people strong procession on December 21, 2020 at Silchar demanding a Manipuri Autonomous Council in Assam," the statement added.
