GUWAHATI: As millions of devotees converge at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj for the grand Mahakumbh Mela 2025, an individual called Deepak Goyal has introduced a novel way for those unable to attend in person to participate in the sacred ritual.

According to Goyal, for ₹1,100, individuals can send their photographs via WhatsApp, which will then be immersed in the holy waters on their behalf.

The unconventional service has sparked widespread debate, with opinions divided on whether it enhances spiritual accessibility or reduces a sacred tradition to a mere transaction.

The Mahakumbh Mela is renowned for its ritualistic bathing at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, believed to cleanse one's soul. However, many are unable to physically visit the event. The concept of ‘digital snan’ aims to bridge this gap by allowing devotees to partake symbolically.

A video featuring the entrepreneur behind this initiative has gained traction on social media, drawing both curiosity and skepticism. While some appreciate the convenience it offers, others question whether such a practice dilutes the essence of the sacred ritual.
