Man infected with Nipah virus in Kerala

GUWAHATI: The government of Kerala has confirmed that a 23-year old man has been infected with the deadly Nipah Virus, which killed 17 people in the state last year.

The student has been admitted to a private hospital, and his reports have turned out positive, indicating that he is infected by the virus, according to a report by NDTV. 

Along with him, four others, including two nurses, are also suspected to be infected with the same as they had come in contact with the 23-year-old.

In addition, 311 people have been kept under surveillance.

According to the Thrissur district medical officer, the man was in Thrissur for a few days and was down with fever.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that he is in touch with the Health Minister of Kerala, KK Shylaja, and has asked the Center to provide monoclonal antibody (medicines) to Kerala.

In the meantime, the Union Health Minister has further urged the public not to panic.
