Major Fraudulent Activity Unearthed At Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, Five Arrested

GUWAHATI: The Bureau of Investigation and Economic Offenses (BIEO) in Assam apprehended five individuals, including the Bank Manager of the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank's Dhubri Branch on Thursday.

The accused were presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup Metro, on August 18, 2023, following their arrest on August 17.

This development comes in the wake of BIEO Police Station Case No. 09/2022, where charges under sections 467, 420, 406, 468, 471, 472, and 475 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been levelled against them.

The case unfolded after the present Branch Manager filed an FIR, alleging that in collaboration with certain other bank officials, a bank employee identified as Dilip Kr Paul orchestrated a fraudulent scheme.

The alleged scheme involved siphoning off an astonishing sum of ₹7,64,000 from numerous customers under the guise of Fixed Deposits. The accused further fabricated counterfeit passbooks and certificates in the bank's name to substantiate their illicit activities.

Subsequent investigations conducted by BIEO, Assam, unearthed compelling evidence implicating the then Branch Manager, Dipankar Das, along with other bank officials, in this elaborate scam. The investigations unveiled a trail of deceit, revealing that they fabricated fictitious passbooks and Fixed Deposit Certificates, which they then distributed to unsuspecting customers.

This scheme resulted in substantial financial losses for numerous bank customers.

Based on the incriminating evidence gathered, BIEO, Assam, moved swiftly to detain the key individuals involved in the fraud. Those arrested include:

1. Dipankar Das: Branch Manager
2. Kokil Kashyap: Bank PO
3. Santosh Kr Nath: Accountant
4. Rupam Modak: Contractual Assistant
5. Surajpal Singh: Contractual Assistant
