GUWAHATI: The main Astadhatu idol of Goddess Ugratara that was inside the 'Saktipeeth' Ugratara Temple has been stolen in the early hours today from the heart of the Guwahati city, in the Uzan Bazar area.
The thief looted and vandalized the temple and took away the main idol besides valuables and offerings.
According to reports, when the temple priest opened the temple doors he found the idol missing and all items vandalized. The temple is just barely 200 metres from the Latasil Police Station.

The devotees and locals immediately thronged the area and in a shocking footage from CCTV found 4 thieves merrily decamping with all the looted goods.
The idol has been worshipped in the temple since 1044 AD and the temple is revered as one of the 52 holy places of pilgrimage for the Hindus in the country.
