Lockdown Kicks in, Guwahati Streets Go Empty

GUWAHATI: Assam has gone into a state of complete lockdown starting 6 PM today. The government of Assam has imposed Section 144 across the state (making the assembly of people unlawful).

While Guwahati was abuzz since the morning of March 24, as the Janata Curfew ended at 8 AM, the city came to a standstill as soon as the clock struck 6 PM.

The roads have become quite empty, with a large percentage of the population deciding to stay home.

Post 6 PM, city police personnel could be seen at every nook and corner of Guwahati urging people to reach their homes at the earliest before they start to impose fines.

It should be mentioned here that  millions of people across India have been placed under lockdown until the end of the month in an effort to halt the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.

India, the world's second most populous country, has over 500 positive cases of the coronavirus, including ten deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (as on March 24).

In Assam, if people are seen defying the lockdown, they will be charged a fine of Rs 1000 or a jail term of 6 months or both. In case a person violates the rules a second time, they may be jailed for 2 years.
