Locals and tourists in the city can now locate toilets from any location using Google Toilet Locator

Swachh Survekshan 2018 was launched today by Guwahati Municipal Corporation at Guwahati Town Club. Administrative dignitaries like GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Monalisa Goswami, Commissioner GMC, Kapil Bora and Sagarika Goswami, renowned TV actors were present at the event. The event begun with the lamp lighting ceremony by Honble’ Mayor, Guwahati Municipal Corporation followed by speech from the dignitaries present.

The Government of India is conducting Swachh Survekshan 2018 as a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) to encourage cities to improve their urban sanitation.

The objective of Swachh Survekshan is to encourage large scale citizen participationand create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities a cleaner and better place to live in. In her keynote address, Monalisa Goswami, Commissioner GMC said, “We have been taking several initiatives to make Guwahati the cleanest city. In this regard we have launched an application called Swachhata App, with the help of which citizens can register their complaints and the authorities will immediately look into it within a specified time frame.” She also mentioned that now locals and tourists in the city can locate toilets from any location using Google toilet Locator.

It was also announced that a city-based survey will be conducted by Guwahati Municipal Corporation to assess the cleanest school, hotel, hospital, market association and resident welfare association (RWA) in the city and recognize the winners in the said categories.  In this regard, Mrigen Sarania mentioned about source segregation. He said, “Every week Tuesday and Friday are kept to segregate dry waste and wet waste. For this 58 NGO’s are appointed and divided in various areas for different works related to cleanliness.” He also requested the entire media fraternity to spread the word amongst general public so that Guwahati stands as the Number One clean city amongst the whole country.

On this occasion, Kopil Bora and Sagarika Goswami, famous actors from the Assamese film industry, were introduced as the City Brand Ambassadors for Swachh Survekshan 2018. Mr. Kopil Bora, on being chosen as the face of Swachh Survekshan 2018 said, “I am glad to be a part of this initiative and would like to be called as the goodwill Ambassador, rather than brand Ambassador. From my end, I shall support and promote Swachhata in any way I can.”


Additionally, the survey also intends to foster a spirit of healthy competition among towns and cities to improve their service delivery to citizens, towards creating cleaner cities. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Loni Borpatragohain, Collector GMC followed by media interaction.
